A picture book · for small readers
THE MIDNIGHTDOSE
When the nursery clock strikes twelve
☾
A late hour
The little kitten burned with fever. Outside, the moon kept watch through the curtain. Inside, two small nurses would not leave her side.
﹢
The warm spoon
They warmed the spoon by the lamp, then cooled it carefully. Medicine is serious business at midnight.
–
One drop of courage
A single drop of tonic, then another. The boy held the bottle as if it were treasure. The girl held the patient.
✦
Breathing easier
Paws uncurled. Whiskers found the air again. The lamp seemed kinder somehow.
⌢
Watch kept
No medals for midnight nurses — only a sleeping kitten and the soft pride of having stayed.
THE END
Told for the picture house · a night of careful nursing
